Feb. 22nd, 2006 06:32 pmThe house was quiet. No one was around. Except for a platypus and a nymph. But Maeve didn't really count.
That left Echo all by herself in the library, curled up in a chair, slowly flipping though a book. She would pause ever so often, staring intently at the words and pictures, reading and looking at them over again. When she got to the end of the book, she started over. And slowly read through it again.
When she finished it the third time, she finally closed the book, and wrapped her arms around it. Resting her chin on the edge of the book, she pulled her legs closer to her, curling up in the a ball in the big chair.
If anyone was in the room, they would have seen a tear run down her cheek.
Sometime later, she finally got up, leaving the book in the chair behind her. Both arms wrapped around her stomach, she left the room, quietly closing the door behind her. As the door clicked shut, the book slipped off the chair and fell to the floor, landning cover side up. Only one word adorned the cover.
Snakes.
